Music
There are a wide variety of ensembles, groups and projects to get involved in, whatever your musical tastes. And remember, if there's something you want to see going on in Pembroke that isn't on offer at the moment, we'd love to help you start it up. Here are some of the things that go on at the moment:
- Pembroke College Music Society (PCMS) - organises a wide range of events, including termly concerts at the GAB.
- Master's Recitals - these happen twice a term and are short, informal performances in the Master's Lodgings. Anyone can come along to play or listen and have some wine.
- Chapel Choir - evensong every Sunday, Christmas Concert and tours abroad.
- Chapel Recitals - outside musicians and Pembrokians team up to perform recitals in the college chapel.
- Chamber Music ensembles - informal groups given the opportunity to perform.
- Secular Choir - a non-auditioning, secular, mixed voice choir. This was only started last year and it would be great if it continued to thrive.
Drama
Pembroke has a growing reputation for dramatic arts. There's a lot to get involved in, but once again if you want to start something we'd love to help - our job is to facilitate whatever you want to do. Here are some of the things which will be happening this year.
- Cuppers - an inter-college drama competition open only to Freshers, which happens in Michaelmas term - direct or act in (or even write) a play to be performed in front of an audience and a panel of judges. We can enter multiple teams so we would encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.
- Arts Week - a week of performances and other artistic endeavours in Trinity term - the highlight of the year for Pembroke art, music and drama.
- The Musical - every year PCMS productions puts on a full-scale musical (last year it was Kiss Me Kate which was a great success).
- Panto - Pembroke traditionally ends the Michaelmas term with a festive Christmas pantomime, usually written by a member of the college.
We would also encourage you to audition for university plays, which can be great fun and a good way to meet new people. See the Oxford University Dramatic Society (OUDS) website for more info on this (www.ouds.org).
